Edward T. Duffy, is a retired executive who was employed by Exxon Mobil Corp for 37 years.
He is married for 47+ years and has 4 children. Ed relocated to Southbury from Houston, Texas area in 2004 to be closer to his family. He always planned to become active as a volunteer after retirement. Ed contacted SAA in early 2005 thinking he could do some “office stuff” and never thought of becoming an EMT. “In 2005 I didn’t really know what an EMT was/is and anyway thought I’d be too old!” Ed said.
After taking the EMT course in Spring 2005, Ed was certified and has been working as a volunteer every since, averaging over 850 hours per year. In addition to being a certified EMT he is certified by the American Heart Association as a CPR instructor and instructs Southbury residents in the fundamentals of this important, potentially life-saving skill.
Last fall Ed became a Crew Chief and was elected as SAA’s Training Officer. “I see the Training Office position as very important in helping our young volunteers, most of whom are young enough be my grand children, hone their skills and abilities so they instinctively perform at a high level when rendering patient care and when interacting with the patient and the patient’s family. I believe the confidence a volunteer can perform at a high level, enhances the natural satisfaction derived from serving members of the community who are having a medical emergency.” Ed said. “ Being a volunteer gives me the satisfaction that I am able to serve others at a point in their lives when they are having a medical-crisis and are in need of quality emergency care and a sensitive, sympathetic caregiver.”
Ed also enjoys golf and is an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Southbury.
